Fish oil is one of the most popular supplements in the world. More than a third of adults who supplement will have fish oil as part of their rotation.
It’s so great for us because it has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are considered the most active and relevant compounds.

So, What Is The Issue Here?
These compounds are unstable. Omega-3 fatty acids were known to be chemically fragile, and can easily break down when exposed to natural conditions such as light, heat and oxygen. They are readily oxidised to other chemicals, the effects of which are unknown. As an example, a study investigating the effects of consuming fish oil after oxidization showed a huge increase in the mortality rate of newborn rats.
Basically, oxidisation = bad news
I’m sure that we don’t need to explain to you that consuming rancid fish oil is bad for you, but here is the problem…
In 2015, an earlier study by The Liggins Institute in New Zealand, tested 36 brands of fish oil supplements capsules and used the international industry standard tests of oxidation.
83% were oxidised beyond international recommended levels, and how “off” they were had nothing to do with best-before date, price, or the country they came from.
Further more, 69% of products tested had less than two-thirds the amount of DHA and EPA specified on the label.
Four studies from North America, South Africa and Europe have also uncovered high levels of oxidation in fish oil supplements.
All up, only 8% met the international recommendations. Eight. Percent.
