6 Biggest Mistakes Beginners Make

Have you been eating extremely “healthy”, training nearly every day of the week (sometimes even twice a day) and climbing endless mountains – yet, you’re still not reaching the body you want?

Here are a few tips and tricks to avoid silly mistakes when hitting the gym:

A lot of women are afraid to lift weights because they don’t want to get big and bulky. Gaining muscle mass comes from a combination of excessive calories and heavy lifting. If you’re not eating more calories than what you’re expending in a day (…and not pumping yourself with testosterone!) then it is EXTREMELY unlikely for you to visually see a ton of muscle growth. Resistance training is a great way to shape and make your body tighter, not necessarily making it bulkier. Girls, isn’t that we want?! The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you will burn outside of gym – which leads to greater fat loss!

2. Technique and Form

When preforming any exercise, make sure your form and technique is correct. Make sure you do your research on specific machines. I’m not telling you this because I don’t want you to look like an idiot, I’m telling you this because I want you to maximize your results and prevent any injuries from occurring.

 3. More is Better

In all likelihood, the mindset you currently have is “more is better”. So you probably find yourself spending hours at the gym doing more sets and reps but struggling to see results you want.

Don’t overload your workout with endless exercises. Stick to compound movements to build your foundation. Over-training can also lead to muscle fatigue which can impact your recovery.

 4. Going to the Gym to Socialise

Crushing your workout should always be your number one priority when going to the gym. Numerous times, I’ve seen people at the gym taking far longer rest breaks in between sets because they’re having long conversations.

First things first. Please be considerate of other people as they are most likely waiting for the same exercise machine. Small gym chats are fine but when you realize “I’ve been at the gym for hours”, then you’re probably not going to get the results you want.

 5. Cardio or Overload

Walking in the gym for the first time can be daunting for some, especially when there are tons of different exercise machines around you that are unfamiliar. As a result, you find yourself going straight to the cardio machines. The reality is that you aren’t going to get that

toned-looking body by just doing cardio. You need to incorporate both cardio and resistance training to achieve your goal body.

 6. Not Having a Plangot-a-plan

A lot of people make the mistake of going to the gym and not having a routine or a workout plan, and end up wasting half of their time thinking “what should I do next?”

Always plan ahead before you check-in to the gym. This way you will use your time effectively and have a greater sense of accomplishment.
